What is a Work Permit?
A Work Permit grants students permission to work while attending school. It is a document that contains the span of hours and work place restrictions that are unique to working minors. Work Permits are issued with the understanding that school is a minor's first and most important job. Having a Work Permit is a privilege that can be revoked at any time if it is determined by the school that a student is failing to progress towards graduation due to poor academic performance or excessive absenteeism.
Do I Need A Work Permit Before I Get A Job?
No. Students don’t need a Work Permit until they are hired somewhere or about to be hired. A Work Permit is not a document that allows the student to work at any location, it’s a unique contract between the student, parent, and the specific place of employment. That’s why we can’t issue a permit without the employer information.
How Old Do I Have to Be?
It depends on who hires you. Some places only hire 16 and up, some places are more open to hiring younger students. The only difference is the amount of hours you can work on a school day and the time span. See chart below for details.
